Overlooking Encounter Bay the brief called for the design to address the two street frontage, bring the sea views to the south and east inside as well as creating an outdoor living area protected from the wind.
The overall form makes reference to the mid century modern architecture of southern California with strong horizontal lines, flowing spaces and extensive glazing. Downstairs comprises interconnected public spaces whilst the parents retreat, children’s bedrooms and a gathering area for the family are located upstairs.
Heating and cooling requirements are minimized through the use of mechanical shading devices, low–e glazing, and orientation of the living areas. Glazed sliding doors in the public areas provide flow-though ventilation and open the ground floor to sea breezes.
